If your New Year’s resolution was to up your travel game in 2018, you might want to get on it… and quick.
According to the search engine Skyscanner, January is the best time to find the most affordable travel deals for the first half of the year, before prices and demand rises in the early summer.
“Given the predicted spike in prices shortly after January, this is the ideal time for travelers to search and book cheap flights to most destinations, and finally choose a New Year’s resolution they’ll be more inclined to keep,” the company announced in a report.
According to their research, domestic flights within the United States are about 16 percent cheaper in January than they are throughout the rest of the year, on average. And once March rolls around — aka spring break — the prices could be nearly 13 percent more expensive than the average throughout the year. Read: book now, don’t wait until spring.
If your travel wish list includes some international trips, this is the ideal time to book, as well. The site revealed that international flights are a whopping 36 percent less expensive in January than during the remainder of the year. If you choose to put off booking your flight, you could face up to a 56 percent fare increase come March.
In its report, Skyscanner even identified the best and up-and-coming places where people will be traveling this year (so you can go ahead and book those flights before everyone else does).
The most popular new international destinations were found to be Phuket, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Edinburgh, and Americans specifically can’t wait to explore Hamburg, Lyon, Bologna, and Casablanca. But the most popular spots to travel to — which surprised none of the site’s experts — were New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, and Las Vegas.
