Climbing classes

If you’ve ever tried the climbing machine at your gym, you’ll know that it makes for a surprisingly challenging workout. Within just a few minutes, your legs are burning and you’re covered in sweat. So, it was only a matter of time before HIIT climbing classes became a thing. Sweat by BXR, a cool boutique gym in London, runs ‘Climb To The Beat’ classes. Held in a dark, nightclub-esque space with UV strobes and disco lights, the 45-minute classes involve mounting the steps in time to the pumping beats. Meanwhile, Rise Nation in Melbourne’s South Yarra is the first in Australia to jump on the trend, holding 30-minute vertical climbing classes.

HIIT Yoga

It’s safe to say that HIIT and yoga are on opposite ends of the workout intensity spectrum. But nevertheless, they’re set to join forces in 2019, with HIIT yoga becoming the new fitness trend to watch. The class will combine the heart rate-boosting and fat-burning benefits of HIIT with the stretching and flexibility aspects of yoga, making for a well-rounded workout. The HIIT Yoga trend was pioneered by Colorado yoga studio CorePower Yoga, with US gym chain Life Time Fitness also recently launching their own version called Fire Yoga. No doubt we’ll see this workout popping up in gyms and yoga studios across the globe in 2019.

On-demand workouts

We’ve already seen on-demand workouts become huge in 2018 in the form of immersive-fitness classes, like the Mirror system. Next year, we’re likely to see more gyms jump on the streaming bandwagon, as a way of offering extra group fitness classes in off-peak times. Les Mills Virtual allows studios to stream pre-filmed workout classes like Body Pump, Grit and The Trip on a screen in their club, so people can follow the workouts in their own time.

Co-working + working out

Can you imagine not even having to leave your office to get a world-class workout? Thanks to the new fitness trend sweeping co-working spaces, this could soon be a reality. As well as healthy cafes, a growing number of co-working spaces are opening on-site boutique fitness and wellness studios. Wellness club Rise By We opened in the Manhattan branch of WeWork in late 2017, while Luminary allows busy women to sneak in workouts between meetings. In Australia, Creative Cubes in Melbourne has a yoga, mindfulness studio and an Orange Theory Fitness studio, while La Porte Space in Sydney boasts a beautiful Pilates studio and infrared sauna.

Guided runs

Good news for those who like the idea of running, but get seriously freakin’ bored after 15 minutes! Facilitated through wearable tech devices, audio-guided runs and run coaching are on the rise.  Apps like Aaptiv give you real-time advice on your technique and speed, while Studio makes running on the treadmill more interesting with coaching, music and competition. It may be just the thing you need to motivate you to go the extra mile (literally!)

Return of the treadmill

Speaking of the treadmill, it’s set to make a serious comeback in 2019. We’ve already seen the popularity of group fitness classes that incorporate treadmill running like Barry’s Bootcamp, Orange Theory Fitness and Mile High Run Class and these will only continue to grow in 2019.
Meanwhile, we’re seeing more gyms hold dedicated treadmill classes, like Precision Running, and Peloton continues to lead the way for home-based virtual reality treadmill workouts.
