We all have those days when we feel unstoppable. Maybe it’s because you’ve just had a long, relaxing holiday or just a good night’s sleep — but whatever the reason, you’re bursting with energy, creativity, and inspiration. You’re whizzing through your to-do list at the speed of light, smiling at strangers on the street and generally just killin’ it at life.
Other days, not so much. Nobody is at the top of their game all the time, so it’s only natural that you’re going to have days where you feel like you’re treading water and going nowhere. But what happens when a day of feeling like this turns into days, weeks or even months? It’s not that you’re depressed, per se. You’re still getting out of bed in the morning and ticking off your to-do list (albeit slowly and begrudgingly.) But you just feel a little ‘blah’ and are no longer excited about life.
If this sounds familiar, chances are you’re in a life rut. Often, this happens because you’re stuck in the monotonous daily grind and it feels a bit like groundhog day. The good news is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! By making a few simple changes to your routine, you can shake yourself out of your rut and get your mojo back!
Do a social media detox
Often, when we feel like our lives are dull and boring, it’s because we’re comparing ourselves to others with seemingly more exciting lives. Social media is one the worst enablers of comparison — not to mention a huge productivity sap! Why not try turning off your phone for a weekend and instead, catch up with friends, get out in nature and do the things you love doing. You’d be surprised how much of a difference it makes to your mindset!
Take a mini break
Traveling is by far the best way to broaden your perspective and pull yourself out of a life rut. But you don’t need to book an epic 3 month trip around Europe to reap the benefits. Even just taking a mini getaway for a weekend is a great way to hit reset and start feeling like your normal self again. Luckily, there are plenty of fantastic options right on your doorstep that won’t cost you and arm and leg. You can check out some of our favourite mini getaway destinations in Australia here.
Find something to look forward to
Sometimes, we fall into a rut because our lives lack excitement. Doing the same thing day in, day out feels far less difficult when you have something fun to look forward to in the near future. Whether it’s a girl’s night, music festival or big trip, planning ahead will help put the bounce back in your step.
Try something new
Whoever said variety is the spice of life knew what they were talking about! Trying something you’ve never done before or taking up a new hobby is a great way to shift your perspective and get you excited about life again. We’re not necessarily saying you need to go skydiving (although that might help!) — it can be something as simple as going to a dance or art class.
Declutter your life
Walking into a messy home or working at a cluttered desk doesn’t exactly do wonders for your mood or productivity. Spending a day tidying, cleaning and clearing out things that no longer inspire you is a great way to reignite your sense of purpose. Better yet, spend some time rearranging your furniture — it’s a simple way to make your space feel like brand new without having to start from scratch.
Change up your commute
Let’s face it — taking the same route to and from the office every day can be rather dull and repetitive. If you drive, why not try changing it up a bit or taking a more scenic route? Or if you catch public transport, is there a way you can get off early and walk through a different neighborhood? It’s also a great way to sneak more exercise into your day! Yes, we know it’s getting chillier, but it’s nothing you can’t handle if you have one of these warm athleisure pieces in your arsenal!
Expand your reading list
There’s nothing like a little brain food to get you inspired again! Picking up a new book that’s not your usual genre is a great way to get you thinking in a different way. So, if you’re normally a romantic fiction girl, why not try one of these inspiring career or money books? Or if biographies are more your thing, you could try one of these nail-biting thrillers. Another great way to expand your horizons is by checking out a new podcast — it’ll liven up your commute, too!
