From crystal-filled water bottles and ear seeds to EFT tapping, people have done some pretty strange things in pursuit of health over the years. But as strange as these trends are, they’re mostly painless—which is why we’re never afraid to give them a go. That said, we have to admit that the thought of the latest wellness trend has us gritting out teeth ever-so-slightly. Yep, people are lying on a bed of nails in order to reap a multitude of supposed health benefits.
Okay, so let’s backtrack a little. When we say ‘bed of nails’ you’re probably envisioning some sort of medieval torture contrapment. What we’re actually referring to is are acupressure mats—foam mats studded with plastic spikes. It’s designed to mimic the benefits of the ancient Indian practice of lying on a bed of nails (yes, it is a thing!).

What are the benefits of acupressure mats?

Acupressure mats basically allow you to give yourself acupuncture without having a professional masseuse present. The benefits range from improved blood circulation, better energy levels and sleep and reduced muscle pain, tension and headaches. It’s also said to improve the appearance of cellulite!

How do acupressure mats work?

The experts recommend using your mat for 15-20 minutes per day, then working your way up to minutes-60 minutes. The most popular way to use the mat is to simply lie on your back, but there are also specific sequences you can do to target certain body parts.

Do acupressure mats hurt?

Ahh, now that’s the million dollar question. According to the info on acupressure mat company Shakti’s website, this is kind of a case of ‘no pain, no gain.’ They state that at first, you’re likely to “feel a pricking, warm, sometimes throbbing sensation on the areas being treated.” They explain that this happens for a couple of reasons—the increase of circulation in the area, as well as the build-up of tension being released. The website states that the more you use the mat, the less discomfort you’ll feel— as there’s less tension to relieve!
