But friends, we’ve found the unicorn of hotels. Perched by the water in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Woolloomooloo is Ovolo—and boy, is it a treat! The second you walk into the lobby of this boutique hotel, you know you’ve stumbled upon something special. The hotel somehow merges modern quirkiness with urban, warehouse grunge and pulls it off in spectacular style.

But if you think that’s impressive, wait until you see the suites. Overlooking the marina, these loft-style rooms feature different themes—like the fashion and INXS suites. From the FREE minibar and breakfast, Malin+Goetz toiletries in the bathroom to the healthy snack bags waiting for guests upon arrival, every last element screams modern luxury. There’s also the squatty potties in the bathroom, complete a note on why we should be elevating our legs when we are doing a number 2! Yep, the folks at Ovolo are nothing if not thoughtful!
If for some reason you feel like leaving your beautiful room, you won’t have to venture far to get a drink and a delicious feed. Ovolo is home to Alibi, Sydney’s latest cocktail destination, offering a 100% plant-based dining menu. The vegan food here is just to-die-for: think Chinese charcoal buns, butternut squash gnocchi and coconut cream pie with macadamia crust with banana. They even have a high tea menu, if you feel like being a little bit (more) fancy! While the food is a little on the pricey side, it’s so worth it, as you can tell a lot of effort and detail goes into the making of every dish. The head chef Matthew Kenney obviously takes a lot of pride in his creations.
Just in case you go a little too hard at dinner, Ovolo also boasts a luxurious 24/7 gym and a heated lap pool. In terms of sightseeing, Ovolo is easily in one of the best locations in Sydney. It’s only a 10-minute walk into the city CBD and it’s also close to the cool, urban suburbs of Darlinghurst, Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay.
