If there’s anyone who knows how to design the home of your dreams, it’s definitely Joanna Gaines. The interior design guru (and now television network owner!) has taken the dreams of many to create the most beautiful spaces you’ve ever seen. Joanna Gaines and her husband, Chip Gaines, are co-founders and co-owners of Magnolia Homes, Magnolia Network, and Magnolia Realty in Waco, Texas. Together, they also host HGTV’s Fixer Upper, where Joanna serves as the lead designer and Chip handles construction. Joanna appreciates the old ways of living, simple and hard-working with a home at the center of it all.
In her book, Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave, Joanna Gaines walks you through how to create a home that reflects the personalities and stories of the people who live there. For her, perfection is not the goal. In fact, according to AD, staying flexible so that you can enjoy the process is the key to achieving your ideal home. She uses examples from her own farmhouse to showcase guides and tips for your own design plans. Joanna designs homes that are “equal parts accessible and aspirational”, according to Architectural Digest. The Joanna Gaines Guide to Creating Spaces You’ll Never Want to Leave
1) Dining Rooms Have Many Elements to Them
According to the master interior designer, dining rooms (no matter how often they’re used) have a few key elements to them. Make sure the table is spacious and has room for people, food, and beverages. Find an incredible centerpiece that ties in with your table and dining chairs. Lastly, make sure there are incredible light fixtures and candles to illuminate your home!
2) Pick One (or Two) Design Styles So Your Home Ties in Together
You don’t want your decor to be all over the place when designing your home. Picking one or two styles per room to blend together can help you narrow down the choices in decor, furniture, and lighting that you want for each space. Too much midcentury modern blended with farmhouse could turn into a huge mess. Stick with one to get the job down!
3) Entryways Are the Introduction to Your Home
Joanna Gaines says that this area of the home is a warm welcome to your guests. She says that this area is a visual acknowledgement that you care about your home and your space. It’s also an important place to store all of the things you need to leave your home. Your car keys, raincoats, and shoes live here! Make it a comfortable area to enter and leave your space. Give your guests a preview of what interior design trends are to come when they visit!
4) If You Can’t Go With a Color, Black and White is a Classic
Back in 2018, Joanna Gaines told AD this about her favorite color combination, “I’ve just always loved simple and then building from there. So, black and white, with that contrast, whether it’s in a farmhouse, whether it’s in a modern house, I feel like it can work across the board. There’s something about black and white that’s just timeless. It’s never going to go out of style. It’s never going to not be on-trend.”
