The word “detox” ranks high on Google Trends around this time of year. It’s not surprising, really. We’ve spent the last few weeks consuming things that are usually forbidden and now we feel guilty. Actually, we feel sinful and we think we need a “cleanse.”
In a moment of desperation, we find ourselves buying seven days worth of juices and signing up for FebFast. And while the latter is a great idea, before you hit the checkout on your liquid diet, we turned to the expert: clean-eating guru, Gwyneth Paltrow. Every year, Gwyn begins January with a weeklong detox, and she’s just released the meal plan for 2017.
While her cleanses are notorious for being relatively hardcore, this one looks doable—if you can handle no caffeine, alcohol, gluten, added sugar, processed oils and butters, vegetable oils, nightshades, corn, shellfish, red meat, soy, and dairy. That being said, she does admit, “A diet full of smoothies and kale salads is pretty unappealing and almost untenable” so perhaps there’s hope for us after all.
In 2017, Gwyneth has us fully prepped with 14 recipes, a shopping list and a detailed schedule. She recommends making one large shopping trip to grab all the ingredients, reserving about 40 minutes each day to prepare the meals and setting aside some extra time on Sunday for meal prep.
She promises “soothing and cozy–hot breakfasts, warm and filling dinners, and quick and simple lunches that are anything but a #saddesklunch.”
The detox is designed to reset the metabolism and relieve the gut, not induce starvation. But since we’re yet to try it—and considering her track record—we can’t confirm. Check back in a week to see if we’re still standing.
