We’ll keep the intro short, as unless you’ve taken your digi detox a little too far, we trust you’re familiar with Elle Ferguson—one half of the fashion duo behind popular lifestyle destination, They All Hate Us.
Best known for her impeccable style, all-year-round boss tan and beachy blonde waves, the 33-year-old has clocked up an Instagram following of 600k plus who tune in daily to see what she’s doing, where she’s going, what she’s wearing and which labels she’s coveting (thank the social media Gods for tap tags, hey!).
Earlier this year, she leveraged her influencer status to launch Elle Effect, her very own line of self-tan. It quite literally smells like roses and promises to give you her signature faux glow (oh, and just so we’re clear—Kimmy K approves).
Read on as we chat to the Aussie bombshell about what inspired her to delve into this new business venture, her endless love for distressed denim and why everything she does in life comes back to embracing what she likes to call the “Elle Effect”.
Firstly, congratulations on the launch of Elle Effect! What inspired you to create your own tanning mousse and what have you enjoyed most about the process?
I was inspired by other women in this space like Jen Atkin, Kim Kardashian, Emily Weiss and Kristen Noel Crawley that are creating quality brands with their own names on it—creating products that people want. I also listened to what my community was asking for and a constant question I was being asked was how to get a great tan without the sun and what do I use… the process has had highs and lows but the most enjoyable part would be right now hearing the amazing feedback from people using [my product.]
Your newly engaged! What changes (if any) will you be making to your beauty routine leading up to the big day?
For me it’s consistency, nothing crazy or dramatic. I will continue to eat clean and exercise. I’d like to think I won’t be stressed and just have that ‘love bubble glow’.
Do you have a favourite beauty hack?
Hand on heart, life is better when you’ve got “that glow” and that’s why I made the tan… it’s been my beauty hack for years.
What is the biggest beauty mistake you remember making in your teen years?
Two words: face glitter.
Do you have a specific morning and night time routine that you follow?
I’m big on gut health so The Beauty Chef is part of both my morning and evening routine.
Your blonde locks are serious hair goals. What’s your secret?!
Ha! My secret is that I actually grew my colour out and I’m now 99% my natural colour with a few baby highlights around my face that I get done every 6 months. It took me a long time to actually realise your natural colour is most likely the best colour.
What fashion trends are you looking forward to as we move through Autumn here in Aus?
Drawing inspiration from Paris at the moment, I can’t wait to layer up with jumpers, jackets, boots and beanies.
Are there any fashion trends you’d be happy to see go?
Track pants. They’re not fashion.
How would you best describe your own personal style and how has this changed over the years?
I feel like everything I wear I seem to always put a little “Elle Effect” into it. I’ve done this for years—whether it be a shirt back to front or change the hemline of a dress, 9 out of 10 times I customise what I’m wearing. Oh and denim shorts… it always comes back to denim.
As a social media influencer, your phone is a huge part of what you do. How do you manage to switch off? Are there times you feel you need a digital detox or have you found the right balance?
So truth be told, I actually don’t switch off… and I need to. I’m trying to work out what I can do to have a little time out from social media because I think it’s refreshing and I need to do it.
Can you share with us some other exciting projects you’re currently working on?
Where do I start, I’ve announced my collab with L’Oreal, I have another two covers coming out before the middle of the year (wow), I have just designed my first range with Billabong which has launch globally [this month]. It will be EPIC… there are so many amazing things happening in this space. Oooh and my wedding!
