Natural ways to calm the mind and body of a busy mum

Between soccer practice, playgroup and cooking dinner, it can de difficult to find time for you.

The saying is so very true, that becoming a parent is one of the most rewarding jobs, but it is also one of the hardest. Nothing can prepare you for the endless nights of sleep deprivation, the demands of a child or the simple fact that you are 100% responsible for the life of another human being.

When you’re a new mum it can be very easy to let the smallest things escalate and make you feel overwhelmed. And although it’s normal to be entirely focused on your child, it’s still important to not neglect your own needs.

So, here are a few things you can do to stay calm, remain centered and present, and actually enjoy the most incredible job in the world.

7 everyday habits to control mummy stress

1. Nap

If you have a new born the golden key is to sleep when the baby sleeps and if you’re one that has a hard time sleeping during the day, then use the time for meditation. Resting allows you to mentally, physically and spiritually recharge.

2. Meditate

Even if it is for just 5 minutes each day to tune in, regain your focus, come back to centre and allow yourself to feel your breath – the depth, the width and the length.

3. Start a mindful ritual

Do something for yourself that allows you to slow down and be mindful. For example, it could be as simple as pouring yourself a cup of herbal tea and sitting outside in the fresh air to drink it. With each sip imagine you are drinking in healing and supportive energy.

4. Exercise

Get the body moving and get the endorphins pumping. This can be a brisk walk, a jog with the pram or a session at the gym. Most gyms have a crèche these days, utilise this option and take an hour for yourself. Try a class, lift some weights, go for a swim or box; listen to your body and it’ll let you know how it needs to move.

5. Take a bath

When all the little ones are down for the night, run a bath and put in some Epsom salts or a few drops of lavender essential oil (known for its ability to relax and reconnect with the lightness of spirit). Become aware of any tension in the body and let the warmth of the bath melt it away.

6. Get a regular massage

Let the therapy of touch help to calm the body and mind.

7. Don’t beat yourself up

Be kind, gentle and nurturing to yourself as you are to your child. If you feel your emotions getting away from you, take 10 deep breaths, feel the mind settle, put your hand on your heart and tell yourself something positive.
