Once upon a time, dessert was simply a distant memory for vegans and the lactose intolerant. Oh, how times have changed! Thanks to a growing number of vegan-friendly dessert places offering everything from gelato and cakes to doughnuts, sweet treats are well and truly back on the menu. But if there’s one dessert we didn’t think we’d see get the vegan treatment, it’s churros—given that the Spanish and Portugese delicacy contains ALL of the dairy (milk, eggs, butter…). Yet somehow, the legends over at dessert joint San Churro managed to create a dairy-free version, and we’re chur glad they did!
Turns out, San Churro have actually always used a vegan-friendly churros recipe. But now, they’re taking things to the next level with their brand new autumn menu—which features a whopping 24 different vegan desserts and drinks. Amongst the delicious, dairy-free lineup is the The Happy Vegan, a made fresh-to-order churro bowl rolled in cinnamon sugar, filled with vegan salted caramel and honeycomb gelato, drizzled in dark chocolate, topped with smashed oreos and fresh strawberries. Another highlight is the droolworthy vegan cookie butter filled churros, piped with a caramel spiced cookie filling. Also worth mentioning is a fully vegan alternative to one of their fan favourites, the CSP (Churro Snack Pack). Muy deliciosa!
Not only do the new vegan offerings have our tastebuds singing, but they’ve also got the official stamp of approval from vegan authority, PETA. “San Churro’s delectable vegan treats make it easy to indulge your sweet tooth whilst also being sweet to animals,” says PETA’s Head of Campaigns, Mimi Bekhechi. “Offering plant-based dessert options is a piece of cake, and forward-thinking businesses such as San Churro who are listening to their customers and introducing tasty vegan options are reaping the rewards.”
For San Churro’s CEO, Giro Mauric, the new menu was a no-brainer. “At San Churro, our brand motto is mi casa su casa.
