Remember back when active wear was only worn to the gym? Oh, how times have changed. Now, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear your gym clothes to the shops, out to dinner and depending on where you work, even the office. Quite frankly, it’s not hard to see why we’re all rocking our exercise gear as often as we can. They’re flattering, comfy and makes us feel like we’re being productive even when we’re not! But where do you draw the line? With the festive season well underway, we can’t help but wonder: is it okay to wear your fitness gear to a Christmas party? The short answer is — yes! It’s all about choosing just one sporty item to pair with chic essentials for a dressed-up athleisure look. Here are some of our favourite ways to nail the sporty luxe look this Christmas:
The crop
Believe it or not, you can wear your sports bra to a holiday party! But there’s definitely an art to rocking crops outside of the gym. To keep your look chic and classy, aim for just a slither of exposed skin (rather than your whole tummy!) To avoid looking too ‘on my way to Coachella’, stick to neutrals and pair a 3/4 crop with a high-waisted maxi skirt and simple pumps. Festive red circle sunnies à la Kate Hudson are optional!

The tights
Sometimes, you just don’t feel like wearing a skirt or dress to a Christmas party. But what’s a girl to do when it’s way too hot for jeans? One word: leggings! When paired with a pair of heels and some simple, gold bling, they can actually look extremely elegant. Just make sure you team it with a top long enough to cover your butt. We love this long-sleeved, chambray top, but a silk or satin button-down works just as well!

The mesh top
Want to add a sporty 90s vibe to your Christmas party look? Then get your mitts on some mesh! The lightweight material is just as fab for balmy summer nights as it is for the gym. Team it with a strapless bra, high-waisted skirt and a statement clutch for a sophisticated urban look.

The sneakers
It’s no secret that we’re mad about sneakers here at Amodrn. They’re comfy, cool and oh-so-versatile. So versatile, in fact, that you can even wear them to a Christmas party! But to keep your look from being too casual, opt for a fashion-forward pair. Think sleek white sneakers (or the festive-looking New Balances in the above image), over chunky runners! Pair them with a silky slip dress for a sporty yet feminine look.

The sports jacket
Is it just us, or has the weather in Australia been extremely temperamental lately? One minute it’s hot, the next minute it’s cold—it’s almost impossible to know what to wear! A lightweight bomber jacket is a great option for throwing over the top when you head to a Christmas party. We love how Olivia Palermo has used her jacket to add an unexpected sporty edge to her otherwise girly look. You can recreate her look by teaming yours with a silky button-up, long pencil skirt, and simple stilettos.

The baggy gym tee
Let’s face it: Christmas parties often involve eating a lot of canapes. The last thing you want to be wearing while stuffing your face is a tight dress or top. That’s where that loose tee you wear to the gym comes in! Dress it up with a form-fitting patterned mini skirt and some minimalistic, metallic jewellery. To keep your outfit from looking too mismatched, it’s best to stick to just one or two colours (like black and white!)

The running shorts
Want to make your legs look a kilometre long? Then grab those running shorts out of your wardrobe. Yes, really! Pairing them with a loose white boy-style tee, blazer, and some strappy heels will give you Victoria’s Secret model-esque dimensions. But unfortunately, not just any old shorts will do the trick for a Christmas party. Opt for a satin or leather-look pair to avoid looking like you literally just hopped off the treadmill.
