I’ve got a bone to pick with eyeliner. Every time I finally get the hang of doing it without ending up with panda eyes, the trend changes. First, liner on both the inside and outside rims was all the rage (how we managed to do that without making ourselves cry, I’ll never know.) Then, it was just liner on the bottom for a dramatic smoky look. Somewhere along the way, we all developed Adele fever and ditched the bottom liner in favour of a clean, winged linerlook. Now, it seems the beauty world has been turned on its head, because everyone is obsessed with something called ‘upside down’ eye makeup.
Thankfully, the hot new beauty trend doesn’t involve putting on your eye makeup while hanging upside down. No, all it means is that bright, bold winged-out liner is back in a big way— but only on the lower lid. Chances are, you’ve seen this look around and thought “hey, that’s a bit different!” but didn’t know there was a name for it. Everyone from Margot Robbie and Olivia Munn to Shay Mitchell has been rocking the look on the red carpet lately.
We have to say, this is one eye makeup look we’re on board with. Not only is it the best way to add a pop of colour for spring without looking too OTT, the look is super easy to recreate at home. All you need to is grab a vibrant shade of liner or eyeshadow (applied with a thin brush) and swipe it on the lower lid. However, it’s important to make keep the rest of your eye makeup, as well as the rest of your look relatively neutral to stop it from looking clownish.
The key to pulling off the trend is to make sure the pop of color you choose is in harmony with the rest of your makeup — particularly blush and lip color
