It’s a cruel irony that often, the time women most feel like having sex is when our periods comes to visit. Whether it’s the fact that we always want what we can’t have, the additional lubrication or the subconscious awareness that we’re least likely to fall pregnant when we’re menstruating, it’s a real thing. Of course, we can have sex during that time of the month (it is the 21st century, after all!) but many women choose not to due to discomfort or fear of making a mess. But what if there was a way you could get down during your period without having to stress about leakage?
That’s exactly what a new invention in the US, Ziggy Cup, claims to allow you to do. It’s the world’s first reusable silicone menstrual cup that can be worn while getting intimate. The reusable device, which lasts up to two years, sits just below the cervix and creates a vacuum seal to catch the menstrual blood.
Sounds great—but possibly uncomfortable, right? Apparently not! Its flat shape, which is inserted into the vagina using a figure-of-eight motion, is so thin, its manufacturer INTIMINA claims it cannot be felt by the user or their partner. Crafted from 100% hypoallergenic material (the same as that of medical implants, which has passed regulations set by the US’ drug-approving body FDA) the company claims the non-toxic cup won’t cause any dryness or irritation.
Of course, the Ziggy Cup can be used throughout your entire period—not just when you’re getting jiggy. Holding up to 76ml of blood, the cup is covered in a hexagon pattern that creates friction to ensure it stays in place. It’s said to provide 12 hours of leak-free reassurance, after which you simply wash it and re-use it.
“Half the world will, once, or currently menstruate—at Intimina, we believe it’s high time women were offered more choice, more control, and more freedom during her period,” says Amandine Pranlas-Descours, global brand director of INTIMITA.
We couldn’t agree more, and any product that allows women to feel more comfortable in their bodies and get their freak on more often has our tick of approval! The Ziggy Cup will set you back $59.99 and is said to last up to two years, which is a pretty reasonable investment when you consider the price of tampons or pads. You can learn more about it here.
