The shopping centres have put up their decorations, Mariah Carey and Michael Buble are on repeat in cafes, your calendar is starting to rapidly fill up… It all points to just one thing: the festive season is well and truly in full swing! That means its nearly time to pick out your Christmas tree and pull the decorations out of shortage.
But if you’re craving something a little more chic than the red and green ornaments and tinsel your parents bought you when you were 12, we can hardly blame you. In the Pinterest era, every occasion is the perfect opportunity to channel your inner interior designer — especially Christmas.
Thankfully, our favourite arts and craft e-tailer Etsy has made it easier than ever to up the style stakes with your decorating. They’ve released a guide to the hottest holidays decor trends for 2017, based on their top searches. From eco-friendly Christmas trees and personalised baubles to modern festive colour schemes, here’s what’s trending this year.
Modern greetings
From Christmas cards to welcome mats, people are moving beyond traditional festive greetings to more cute and creative ones, like ‘Merry Everything’ and ‘Happy Always’.
Greenery
This year has been huge for greenery and it seems the festive season will be no exception. Etsy predicts hues like bright emeralds and deep evergreens will feature heavily in Christmas decor, as will succulents and branches of eucalyptus and fern.
Sustainable Christmas trees
Not keen on the idea of using a chopped down Christmas tree for a month, then throwing it on the curb? You’re in luck, as Etsy says sustainable cardboard trees like this one from Cardboard Christmas are set to be all the rage this year. You won’t have to clean up pine needles, either!
Modern farmhouse
Black, white and burlap will add a rustic touch to the usual red and green Christmas colour scheme, Etsy predicts.
Creative wrapping
It’s time to lift your gift wrapping game, because this year is all about personalised touches like custom gift tags, bespoke stamps and ornaments in place of a bow.
Gingerbread everything
Gingerbread is going to be everywhere this year — and not just in the kitchen. Think gingerbread-inspired candles, ornaments, decor and even clothing!
Sophisticated stockings
Your red and white Christmas stockings from 1996 may inspire nostalgia, but Etsy’s trend expert reckons this year “shoppers are looking to sass up the family stockings.” This means experimenting with chunky knits, faux fur or trending tropical or constellation prints.
Moody hues
“With searches for velvet furniture and decor on the rise, holiday tables will be a bit more shadowy and sophisticated this season, decked out in matte tableware, soft, stonewashed linens, and natural elements like dried cranberries and eucalyptus,” says Etsy trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson. Other colour palettes to keep an eye on are ‘nordic snowfall’, a palette of mixed whites with hints of gold and ‘deep jewels’ a spread of deep gemlike greens, maroons, blues, and blacks accented by hints of metallics like rose gold and silver.
Monogrammed decorations
2017 has undoubtedly been the year of the monogram and the trend is set to continue in the festive season, in the form of personalised wreaths, pillows, drinkware and ornaments.
