It’s like Stella McCartney can read the minds of fit girls everywhere. The designer’s newest collection for Adidas totally blew us away—real athletes practiced yoga, ran on treadmills, and even hopped into an indoor pool to model the colorful, flattering line—and we’re swooning over every piece we saw. Somehow, McCartney knows exactly what fashion-conscious, athletic women want to wear as we kick ass in the gym and on the street.
But we really couldn’t take our eyes off the smooth, unfussy ponytails on every woman performing in front of us. “A sleek pony is the perfect low-maintenance choice for any workout,” explained Aveda Artist and head stylist for the show Frank Rizzieri. Not only does it stay in place for any workout—as showcased by the Adidas presentation—but it would be easy to rock the low pony at work, too. We’re big fans of any hairstyle that allows us to skip the dry shampoo (and a full-on shower) after a workout!
For the complete effect, Rizzieri recommends using Aveda’s Damage Remedy Split End Repair to help keep ends from fraying, a thickening creme for a full pony, and a light hairspray (like Aveda’s Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray) to secure the style. Here’s how to get the look at home.
Step 1
Spray a paddle brush with hairspray to help tame frizzies and deliver shine.
Step 2
Add a split end repairing treatment to the tips of your ponytail. This does double duty, helping your pony look a bit more piece-y and “undone” and protecting tresses from further damage. Then, section hair and spray a generous amount of Aveda Thickening Tonic to the hairline and roots to add extra height to the crown, making your pony look chic … not severe.
Step 3
Comb hair through and for a super sleek look, blow-dry smooth directing the air flow downwards with tension. Smooth and gather hair backwards into hands and create a low ponytail. Fasten with elastic.
Step 4
Take a small section of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap around to cover the elastic. Secure with a pin. Lightly mist the finished look with Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray—you’re done! Go get ’em, tiger.
