5 beauty mistakes you didn't know you were making

And how to fix them!

By now, you’re probably aware of how important having an evening beauty routine is for your skin. It makes sense, as it’s the time to wash the day off your face and set yourself up for overnight skin recovery. But did you know that your morning regime is just as important than your evening one, if not more so?
Your skin produces more collagen during the night, which means oil production is also heightened. This means that you don’t necessarily wake up with the same clean face you went to bed with! So, not only will your A.M beauty regime make you look more fresh and awake, it’ll also help keep acne and congestion at bay.
We get it, sometimes the last thing you feel like doing when you’re in a rush for work in the morning is a complicated beauty routine. It’s so tempting to roll out of bed at the last minute, then just splash your face with water or use a makeup wipe. But this crucial time slot can make or break the quality of your skin as you age.
It’s not just a matter of having a morning beauty regime either. In order to really reap the benefits, you need to be using the right combination of products in the right order. Luckily, now is the perfect time to correct anything you’ve overlooked in the past and get yourself on the path to beautiful skin.
Read on for five of the most common beauty mistakes you could be making in your morning beauty routine.

5 surprising beauty mistakes you could be making every morning

You dismiss serums

Poor serums. They’re the all-important step between cleansing and moisturising, yet they’re somehow always forgotten. One likely reason they’re always given the cold shoulder is that most of us don’t know what the heck they actually do. The short answer is, a lot! The main purpose of serum is to deliver a high concentration of powerful ingredients directly into the skin. As its made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin, serum is better for this than other products like cleanser or face creams. This makes it perfect for targeting specific skincare concerns, like premature ageing
That said, not all serums are created equal. You need a product that hydrates and moisturises, while delivering a powerful dose of antioxidants. Trilogy’s Rosapene™ Radiance Serum ticks all the right boxes. This certified natural serum contains sea algae to help boost skin radiance and aloe to maintain moisture balance. It’s also packed with skincare superhero rosehip oil to nourish the skin and protect against free radical damage.

You neglect your neck and chest

It’s great to pay extra attention to your face when it comes to your skincare regime (especially sunscreen!). But don’t forget this wise advice from beauty guru Zoe Foster Blake: “Your face stops at your boobs.” Just like the eye area, the skin on your neck and chest is extremely delicate, fine and prone to dryness and sagging. This means a little extra TLC is needed!
Don’t worry, you don’t need to rush out and buy any special ‘neck and chest’ products. Your usual cleansers, serums, gentle exfoliants, moisturisers and masks you apply to your face can and should be applied to those areas, too. Most importantly, always make sure you’re extra generous with the sunscreen when it comes to these spots. The neck and chest are particularly vulnerable to hyper pigmentation from the sun. For the same reason, you should avoid spritzing perfume directly onto these areas. Instead, spray your favourite scent into the air a few steps ahead of you, then walk through it!

You forget to exfoliate

Most of us are aware of how important it is to exfoliate before you fake tan. If you don’t, you end up with streaks and dark patches, which is never a good look! But for many of us, the exfoliator ends up at the back of the beauty cabinet when you’re not fake-baking. In reality, exfoliation is an extremely important step in your beauty routine, regardless of whether or not you’re getting your glow on. Not only does it remove dead skin cells, it also unblocks your pores and leaves you with smooth, glowing skin. According to most experts, you should give your bod some scrub love once or twice a week.
However, not just any old exfoliator will do. Products that contain plastic micro-beads can irritate the skin and wreak havoc on the environment. Instead, opt for one that uses finely ground rosehip seeds instead. One of our faves is Trilogy’s Exfoliating Body Balm. This ocean-safe product gently buffs and refines the skin texture without messing with its natural barrier function. We love the fact that it’s an exfoliant but feels more like a luxurious moisturiser, thanks to its nourishing blend of rosehip oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax!

You skip moisturiser in summer

Let’s face it: Australia gets stinking hot in the summer. The thought of slathering your body in moisturiser when you’re all sweaty isn’t exactly appealing. Plus, most of us are using facial sunscreens with a built-in moisturiser anyway. While that may be all well and good for the skin on your face, it’s usually not enough to counteract the drying effect of the sun on your body. In fact, certain sunscreens can actually dry out your skin even more!
It’s always a good idea to moisturise your body immediately after showering every morning (if you do it while you’re still slightly damp, the product can trap some of the water and use it to hydrate the skin). You should never moisturise after you put on sunscreen, as this will dilute the SPF. As for avoiding that gross feeling you get when you moisturise when it’s hot? Try opting for a non-greasy formula, like Trilogy’s Firming Body Lotion. Not only is it quickly absorbed, it makes your skin feel really firm and supple. Plus, it smells amazing, thanks to its blend of lavender, frankincense and rose geranium.

You use the wrong body wash

We’ve written before about how important it is to choose the right body wash. And, we don’t blame you if you’ve been picking based on pretty packaging and enticing scent up until now. Hey, when you’re bombarded with choices in the beauty aisle, it makes sense to choose based on what appeals to your senses! However, a lot of heavily fragranced body washes strip the body of natural oils and are jam-packed with harsh, abrasive chemicals.
You (and your skin) are going to be much better off opting for a certified natural body wash. The good news is, that doesn’t mean you have to switch to an odorless product in bland packaging. We’re currently obsessed with Trilogy Botanical Body Wash. Not only does it come in chic, minimalistic packaging, the naturally scented product contains a relaxing mix of rosehip, kawakawa, and amla. It’s also extremely gentle and feels amazingly refreshing on the skin. Yep, there’s a good reason it was rated the best shower gel for 2016 in the Natural Health International Beauty Awards!
