Whether you like it or loathe it, you’ve got to admit — Starbucks has a knack for keeping things interesting. From anti-inflammatory lattes to unicorn frappucinos, the coffee giants adopt trends faster than you can say ‘venti mocha to go, please’. But this time, it seems Starbucks is pioneering a trend of their very own!
They’ve recently rolled out a layered, colour-changing cold brew coffee in their Asian stores. Yep, it’s an ombre coffee! It’s called the Butterfly Pea Lemonade Cold Brew and it literally looks too pretty to drink. The colour change is achieved by a purple tea in the bottom layer, made from butterfly pea flower. This is often used in colourful cocktails, but this is the first time it’s ever been used in a coffee product.
The next layer of the drink is a sweet and sour lemonade. which helps change the colour of the pea flower tea and balances out the other strong flavours. And lastly, a layer of classic Starbucks Cold brew. As you stir, the colours swirl together, creating a stunning rainbow-like effect. While tea, lemonade and coffee may sound like a really strange combination, Bustle reports it has “A natural earthy flavor to it that can be compared to a fine green tea.”
Starbucks is also introducing two other new drinks to their stores in Asia. There’s the Macadamia Cocoa Cappuccino, which infuses espresso and milk foam with macadamia cocoa sauce, then tops it off with crumbled macadamias, graham crackers, and a nutty chocolate drizzle and the more subtly-flavoured Tahitian Vanilla Macchiato. Sadly, there’s no news yet when these new drinks will be launched internationally. Time to book a trip to Asia, perhaps?
