If you’re on social media (and who isn’t?) there’s a good chance you’ve seen the term ‘moon milk’ floating around lately. Not only is the newest wellness trend dominating our Instagram feeds RN, Pinterest searches for the term have gone up by 746% in the last six months! If you’re anything like me, you may have wondered whether it’s a trendy new dairy milk alternative transported from the moon (hey, it’s 2018—anything can happen!).
Turns out, it’s not a cosmic beverage from outer space (okay, so maybe we’re not there quite yet) but rather, a dreamy-looking sleep tonic. Here, we give you the low down on what moon milk is and why you should make it a part of your sleep routine.
What is moon milk?
While moon milk is currently taking the wellness world by storm, it’s actually been around for hundreds of centuries. In Ayurvedic medicine, the calming bedtime beverage is a common remedy for sleeplessness. It’s comprised of a blend of milk, spices and adaptogens, which are thought to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
“The end of each day is made mindfully medicinal with a concoction of warmed nut milk with holy basil and ashwagandha spiced with cardamom, cinnamon and a dash of local honey,” naturopath and Orchard St founder Kirsten Shanks explained to Vogue Australia.
Yep, if your mum ever gave you milk and honey before bedtime, she was onto something! While recipes vary, moon milk is generally made by mixing ashwagandha (the star ingredient!) with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, honey and your choice of milk. That said, some food bloggers and Instagrammers have been creating Insta-worthy concoctions that are dreamy in more ways than one! Keep scrolling for some of our fave moon milk recipes.
