I’ll be honest; I don’t have facials very often, if at all. I’m in my early twenties and have been blessed with clear skin, bar the occasional blemish (thanks mum!) so in the past I have been sceptical to try facial treatments in fear of a bad reaction. Coupled with the dizzying array of techniques and exotic treatments on offer, I’ve also found that good facials (i.e. ones that actual deliver results) are so few and far between.
However, when one of Australia’s leading medispas, Face Plus Medispa, offered the opportunity for a four-week skin transformation, I was intrigued.
Set above the buzz of Bondi Junction, and with sky-high views of Sydney Harbour, Face Plus Medispa is a modernist light-filled haven. The practice, which is situated opposite high profile cosmetic surgeon Dr William Mooney, offers treatments designed to enhance natural beauty, repairing damage from the inside out. Yes, they have medical grade cosmetic treatments, a luxe fit-out and a team of highly trained (and friendly) nurses and dermal estheticians, but they take a holistic approach to beauty. I knew immediately I had come to the right place.
Here’s what happened during my first facial treatment:
Firstly, my therapist Yvonne guided me through a detailed skin analysis in order to create a tailored plan based on my needs, wants, concerns and facial aesthetic. This involved an analysis by the Visia machine, which is an ingenious (and slightly scary) system that allows you to see details of your face that are naked to the human eye (e.g. sun spots, pore size, wrinkles, texture, red areas, and porphyrins – bacteria). It can also tell your “true” skin age (mine is 17 in case you were wondering). According to Yvonne my skin health is relatively good, but our weekly skin treatments will work to reduce redness and enlarged pores as well as improve overall skin clarity (see my skin before the treatment on right).
Then, it was time for the facial. Using the super-active Dr Spiller range, which is renowned for being very gentle yet effective, Yvonne started with a mild enzyme peel to exfoliate and regenerate my skin. Stage two involved an Omnilux ‘Revive Red’ light treatment. Designed to improve elasticity, plump skin and nourish, the light was non-invasive and pain-free, but I will admit it did take a few minutes to relax and adjust to the brightness.
The result? With no exaggeration, I walked out with radiant, glowing skin. In particular, the stubborn congestion on my chin and redness around my nose were considerably less noticeable. While, it’s too early to tell if there’s been a real change in my skin, I am excited for the next round of treatments.
Stay tuned for an update in a few weeks.
