When it comes to makeup, we don’t really like to follow rules. After all, some rules really are meant to be broken (yes, you can wear red lipstick if you have red hair!).
With this being said, understanding and following the colour wheel “rules” is essential for a good makeup application, particularly if you want your eyes to pop.
But, if you haven’t looked at a colour wheel chart since Primary School, don’t stress! We put together this guide on the best colours and accompanying products for YOUR specific eye colour.
Brown
If you have brown eyes, you can wear virtually any eyeshadow colour, but there are certain shades that can accentuate your peepers. Warm brown shades and gold metallics pair beautifully with brown eyes, as well as purple hues, as they are opposite from brown on the colour wheel. Cool, contrasting shades such as silver, gray, navy and charcoal can also intensify your eye colour.

Hazel
Hazel eyes are a mix of brown and green, so they look great with metallic golds and olive greens as these shades accentuate the light honey undertones. Lighter shades of purple such as lilac and lavender can also enhance hazel eyes.

Green
Warm eyeshadows with reddish undertones, such as cranberry, rust, and mahogany, are the secret to making green eyes look even more vivid. Why? Green is complemented by red on the color wheel. Purple liners and shadows also bring out their natural brightness.

Blue
To really make blue eyes pop, reach for soft shades with orange undertones, such as coral, champagne terracotta, bronze, and burnt copper. Be wary of dark, highly pigmented colors such as black and dark brown as they may be too harsh for the light nature of your eyes.

Gray
If you’ve got gray eyes, stick to cool shades of blue, charcoal and pewter to draw attention to your unique eye color and add depth.
