Heidi Klum needs no introduction. She’s graced our magazines and TV screens for as long as we can remember. So much so, we feel like we know her.
She’s one of the world’s most iconic supermodels, a successful entrepreneur, and a mother of four. She’s also a top contender for the ‘sexiest woman alive’ award so it’s fitting that she’s the owner of a lingerie label (Heidi Klum Intimates) and swimwear label (Heidi Klum Swim), which launched its first collection earlier this year. As the face (and banging body) of both, is safe to say she’s not just saving on talent fees. She appears to be the epitome of natural beauty, but do we really know her?
We sat down with the reassuringly normal (but far from boring) supermodel, to get to know the face behind the camera. From her eating habits to her guilty pleasures, even the contents of her knickers drawer, we got intimate with Heidi Klum.
What inspired your latest Heidi Klum Swim collection?
I wanted to create great shapes in everything from basic colours to the fun prints with beautiful hardware, embellishments, colours, tassels and all of that. Swim is especially fun to play with designing because you can do almost anything! We designed the prints to create variety for women. Same with silhouettes. I made mix and match tops and bottom and one pieces so you can find something you feel great in. I also like to try everything myself after I get back my samples in order to make changes before it goes into production and then to the customer. Have to make sure it’s a great quality and fit.
What lingerie/swimwear should every woman have in her drawer?
I would say some lingerie staples are a great t-shirt bra, a sexy lace bra and a plunging neckline bra for those special occasion dresses. It’s important to have lingerie for every occasion! The A Corps Perdu is a favorite of mine since it has a more natural shape and shows a lot of skin. For swimwear, personally I love a triangle bikini but it’s individual to each woman what they are most comfortable in.
What advice would you give for looking and feeling sexy on the inside and out?
Be yourself! It seems so simple but if you are comfortable in your own skin, you’ll feel sexy and that will show to people around you!
Honestly, having four kids my plate looks very different every day. We have all different eggs in the morning, fried, scrambled and soft boiled. With 4 kids they all like them cooked differently. Always a fresh fruit smoothie too! We love to make them with every kind of fruit you can think of—pineapple, blueberries, kiwi, mango. It’s super quick to make and I know we’re getting great nutrients to start the day! One day we’re having fresh chicken soup and the next it’s meatballs or lamb chops with string beans and potatoes, sauerkraut soup or a huge mixed salad with grilled chicken. I typically stick to fruits, vegetables (the darker the green, like kale and spinach, the better), salads, chicken, fish, yogurt and eggs. I try to avoid fried foods and things with too many additives. BUT, I do love a plate of spaghetti Bolognese sometimes. It’s all about moderation.
Do you have a signature dish?
Every Monday night we make chicken soup at our house as a family activity. It’s such an easy way to get kids learning at a young age about cooking and the importance of eating healthy. They help wash & chop the vegetables, cook the chicken and add all the seasonings into the big soup pot. They are able to learn what exactly goes into the food that they are eating.
Do you follow any food trends? If so, why?
No, no one is allergic to anything and I believe it’s important to have a huge variety in your eating. Fresh, healthy food!
It’s hard to find the time for traditional training. If I can squeeze in an hour to run outside or on the treadmill, I’m happy! But I’m not a couch potato, I’m always on the move!
If you could only do one exercise for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
I really enjoy running, especially outside. There’s something about running to the beat of a song that makes the time fly by. Sometimes, when I run on the treadmill, I post my time and distance on Instagram. You can see I’m not the fastest…but I’m moving! It’s about doing it, not necessarily how fast. This is not a competition!
I try to keep to a simple routine on my days off since I’m constantly wearing makeup when I’m working, but always make sure to moisturise. I also believe your complexion is from the inside out – you have to eat healthy and drink a lot of water.
Every day is different for me – from being on the Germany’s Next Top Model set to America’s Got Talent to Project Runway. If I’m shooting, I start my day bright and early with hair and makeup and try to wrap up at 5pm so I can get home to my family for dinner, bath and bedtimes stories. When I walk into my house, I leave my purse and my work day at the front door and just become mom. I also love our Heidi Klum Intimates and Swim design days, some of which I get to do at my house.
How do you maintain a sense of wellbeing with such a busy lifestyle?
I have four kids so it’s really important to be a role model for them. We try to do fun things together outside. We love to go on bike rides, take our dogs hiking or jump on the trampoline. Being active together and having fun together is a priority.
