There’s no doubt that a great massage when you’re feeling tense or stressed out is a great investment. But would you fork out hundreds of dollars on an Ayurvedic breast massage? The Chopra Center, an Ayurvedic-inspired wellness resort in California, has the treatment on its menu.
Breast health is a vital component on the path to total wellbeing. Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old healing wisdom tradition from India, teaches that in order to maintain a vibrant state of balance, the whole person must be addressed. But in many healing practices, this part of the body is often overlooked.
Breast massage is one of the most effective and nourishing ways to maintain healthy breast tissue and musculature before potential issues arise, and also to heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually after life-changing diseases such as breast cancer.

According to a representative from the center, the actual breasts are only touched during 10% of the treatment. The rest of the time is spent on the tissue on and around the breasts. It focuses on loosening scar tissue, releasing tension, and encouraging drainage and swelling reduction. The benefits reportedly include improving range of motion, reducing pain, flushing toxins through the lymphatic system and increasing circulation.
The massage therapists use the Spurgeon-Shulte Method™, a massage technique designed by breast cancer survivor Sally Spurgeon for women who have undergone breast cancer treatment. So, are Ayurvedic breast massages essential to prevent or help treat breast cancer? According to women’s health expert Dr. Aviva Roma — no, but there’s generally no harm in doing it, as long as it doesn’t replace yearly breast check-ups and/or proper breast cancer treatment. However, it’s worth nothing that you’ll need a referral from a Californian health professional if you want to give it a try.
