We’ve sung songs of praise when it comes to the health and fitness apps already offered through the Apple Watch (ECG reading, glucose monitoring, eye strain prevention and fall detection are just a few of its hi-tech capabilities)and, as of today, Apple have added a menstrual cycle tracker, noise protector and updated physical activity trends feature to their already impressive wellness CV.

Cycle Tracking App

Available with the watchOS 6 update, the new Cycle Tracking app gives women the ability to log important information related to their menstrual cycle and using this data, alert you on your next period and fertile window. In 2018, Fitbit were the first to introduce menstrual tracking to their Versa smart watch, which works in a similar manner.

Noise App

The Noise app is a second feature in the new Apple rollout, highlighting ‘hearing’ as an aspect of health that’s often overlooked. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), sounds at 90 decibels can begin to impact hearing after four hours per week of exposure at this level. Furthermore, hearing loss has been associated with cognitive decline.
In light of this, the Noise app helps users understand the sound levels they’re being exposed to in certain environments such as loud concerts and sporting events. As a precautionary measure, the watch will send a notification alerting the user if it detects sound levels reaching 90 decibels.

Activity Tracking Trends

To ensure you’re getting up and getting moving, the new Trends tab in the Activity app on iPhone now gives users a long-term overview of their activity behaviour including exercise minutes, kilojoules burned and walking pace and whether trends for these key metrics are up or down. If the last 90 days of activity shows a downward trend relative to the last 365 days, the Activity app offers coaching to help the user get back on track.
