A running coach's top tips on finding the right shoe

It’s no secret we’re sneaker obsessed at Amodrn HQ, but with this being said, running shoes and weekend shoes are two very different stories.
Running shoes are designed specifically for the repetitive, high-impact forward motion, whereas other styles serve different purposes (read: they look fab!). And when you’re trying to pound the pavement, the last thing you want to be is uncomfortable or susceptible to injury.
That’s why we asked Nike+ Run Club Sydney Head Coach, Sam Strutt about how to choose the right running shoe.

“Runners have three key needs: fit, feel and force. Nike Running footwear is designed specifically to tackle these needs, and also to provide zero distractions during your workout,” he says, “Your body moves in very specific ways when you run, and does need protection from the impact and repetition so wearing a shoe designed for running, rather than say, the gym, will keep you comfortable and will work with your body in this scenario.”

Sam Strutt’s top tips for finding the perfect running shoe:

1. Comfort. The very first thing you should notice when you slip on a pair of shoes that are right for you is that they are comfortable. Nike focuses on designing footwear that works with your foot, like the Lunar Epic Flyknit, so that a shoe can suit many different foot types and you can focus on what feels comfortable rather than what you “should” be wearing.
2. Fit. Fit is also extremely important. Your feet will swell quite a bit when you are exercising, so make sure you have about half a thumb’s width between your big toe and the front of the shoe. The shoe should fit securely around the heel and hold the midfoot in place adding support to the shoe.
