Everyone has their own way they like to start the day. For some, that might be with an express meditation or yoga session, for others, it might be a strong black coffee, and for the extra keen, it’s a sweaty HIIT class.
Whatever your style is, if there’s one thing we know, it’s that having a great morning routine can set you up for a happy and productive day.
Here, business coach, Alison Morgan shares how she kickstarts her day and 5 surefire ways you can really nail yours:
Wake up early
My motto is to ‘beat the day’ so getting a head start in the early morning means that you can fit so much more in. I get up around 5am each morning to do exercise via an App at home. Giving myself a pocket of time before others wake up allows me to fit in essentials, and for me this is exercise.
Know your day
Knowing what I need to achieve within each day is incredibly important for success. I know clearly the day before how my day is going to play out. The meetings are obvious as they are already scheduled into the diary, however knowing what I need and want to achieve in the pockets around my meetings means that I can achieve both work and life balance. This also allows me to be focused and create the right mindset in the morning to allow this to happen.
Dress for success
The way I dress aligns with my mindset and anticipated outcomes for the day. It’s not unusual for me to get changed a few times a day given that I exercise, have meetings and also have a family (drive my boys around for sporting commitments). I find that dressing for the occasion is extremely important for both productivity and having the flexible lifestyle.
Nutrition
In the mornings I have room temperature water and lemon juice around 30 minutes before breakfast. Breakfast is generally a smoothie, followed by a short black when I’m at my desk. Following this routine provides a predictability that my body expects and also enjoys. During this time I switch off, enjoy the flow of the morning.
Tidy workspace
My desk needs to be tidy before I can start the day. It’s incredible how quickly the desk gets messy over the day–so clearing this space before a new day of work means I’m able to concentrate and stay focused.
