Ever peered into one of those 10x magnifying mirrors where you can see all those pesky blackheads that are practically begging to be squeezed? Yep, us too. While the urge to pick and squeeze is tempting, the possible ramifications (read: redness and scarring) are enough to deter us.
Instead, sticking to a regular skincare regimen (that involves exfoliation) and occasionally visiting an aesthetician for extractions can help keep blackheads at bay. Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide treatments can also help keep pores clean, but they can by drying and irritating, especially if you’ve got sensitive skin.
If you’d rather steer clear of harsh chemicals, it doesn’t hurt to try an all-natural DIY mask. We found quite a few floating around on Pinterest, but one, in particular, stood out because it was super-simple, and we already had the ingredients in our kitchen (win!).
DIY Blackhead Mask
This gentle, exfoliating mask combines lemon juice, brown sugar and honey to leave the complexion looking and feeling soft, smooth, and with a natural glow.
Lemons are naturally high in vitamin C and AHA’s and BHA’s, all of which exfoliate and help clear up blackheads. Honey is antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory. And the sugar has a polishing effect to smooth away dead skin cells that can cause excess congestion.
You’ll need:
2 tbsp brown sugar
½ tbsp honey
2 tbsp lemon juice
*We amended to quantities slightly so it formed a paste consistency and wasn’t too messy.
Instructions:
- Mix ingredients together until it reaches a paste consistency.
- Gently rub the concoction into the skin, using circular motions.
- Let it sit for a few minutes (we tried 10 minutes).
- Rinse off with lukewarm water.
