There’s a saying that goes: In L.A, you throw a rock, you hit an actor. What the saying fails to specify, however, is that said actor is getting a cold pressed soft serve, hanging out at the trendiest vegan mexican restaurant, or spiritually cleansing at the latest it workout.
L.A is a wellness mecca with as many trends as it has aspiring actors. And with every wellness trend comes an equally stylish price tag. As tinsel town is not only made of plastic, but of purified cold pressed pistachio milk, it’s no surprise that being on track with the latest health craze can make quite a dent in your wallet. So when I discovered a US$28 smoothie on a recent visit to Malibu’s SunLife Organics, I have to say I wasn’t so surprised, this is L.A after all. But curiosity got the best of me. Just to put things into perspective for us Aussies: US$28 is about AU$35.
What’s in the billion dollar smoothie, you ask?
Here’s a list of the (suprisingly dense) ingredients in the self titled “billion dollar smoothie”:
Young Thai coconut meat, spinach, raw cashew butter, goat colostrum, chlorophyll, whole leaf aloe, buffered Vitamin C crystals, collagen, Vitamineral Greens, silica, grass-fed whey protein isolate, E3-Live (Brain-On), MCT oil, Four Sigmatic 10 mushroom blend (reishi, chaga, cordyceps, enokitake, maitake, shiitake, Lion’s Mane, Tremella, Agaricus Blazei, and Meshima), rice bran solubles, hemp milk.
While I dissected every ingredient and their somewhat questionable health benefits (10 mushrooms blend? Goat Colostrum?), the complexity of the ingredients themselves is enough to justify its price and so called hype.
We trialled and tested
The smoothie revealed a subtle, vanilla taste that was totally delicious (and thankfully mushroom-free). Would I have it again? Absolutely! Worth the hype? I’ll let you be the judge.
Whether or not this smoothie has a bang for its buck, you’ll have to find out for yourself. If you’re around the Malibu area I totally recommend checking out the Sunlife Organics cafe, even just to see that price tag (and some more affordable alternatives). Who knows, curiosity may get the best of you too (wink wink).
