When you think about fast food, chances are an image of a glistening, beef patty covered in melted cheese wedged between greasy buns comes to mind. So, basically the exact opposite of vegan, gluten-free and organic! But thanks to the expansion of the US’s first health-focused fast food chain, Amy’s Drive Thru, that may be about to change.
Amy’s Drive Thru opened its first location in Rohnert Park, California back in 2015. Here, it was instantly embraced as a healthier, more ethical alternative to the neighbouring Taco Bell and Burger King. It’s thanks to this success that they’re set to open a second store in Corte Madera in 2018, followed by five more locations in Nothern California.
The great thing about Amy’s (apart from it being more virtuous option for long road trips) is the amount of choice. While the store is 100% vegetarian and organic, there are also gluten free and vegan options. There’s also a mix of different cuisines, with the menu featuring everything from burgers and burritos to pizza and mac-n-cheese. Hitting the road early? They also have a breakfast menu with a delicious range of sweet and savoury options. The ingredients are sourced locally and organically whenever possible and the recipes are often sourced from employee’s family recipe books.
Here’s hoping Amy’s Drive Thru continues to expand throughout the US and beyond in the near future. In the meantime, why not use this genius app to track down some gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan alternatives in your local area?
