This Major US City Is About To Ban Fur Clothing And Accessories

I think we can all agree that wearing real animal fur is cruel, unnecessary and let’s be honest, pretty tacky (this isn’t a 90’s rap video clip!). And if there’s one place that rocking around in a mink coat is particularly unnecessary, it’s in the city of Los Angeles (where the average temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit, or 23 degrees celsius). Couple this with the fact that the city tends to lead the way for ‘wokeness’ and it’s no surprise that LA is on track to become the biggest American city to ban to sale of fur clothing and accessories.
Earlier this month, the City Council voted unanimously for the ban, directing the LA City Attorney to formulate a policy that would make fur sales illegal. The council expects that the city attorney will return with the policy in about a month and the ban will take effect two years from the day it is signed into law.

“This is L.A. taking a stand and saying we will no longer be complicit in the inhumane and vile fur trade that’s been going on for years,” said Council member Bob Blumenfield, who introduced the motion.
Los Angeles isn’t the first city in the US to ban inhumane fur trade (it’s already illegal in San Francisco and West Hollywood). However, being such a large city and a fashion hub, the council hope it will create a ripple effect in the US and the rest of the world. “We’re trying to set an example for the rest of the state and the rest of the country,” said Blumenfield.
P.J. Smith, the senior manager of fashion policy at the Humane Society of the United States, agreed that Los Angeles would inspire more cities to go fur-free—even if it’s just to compete with each other! “San Francisco’s colder, and when San Francisco banned fur sales, it was considered the compassion capital,” he said. “Then you have L.A. turning around and claiming that title back.”
However, he noted that he couldn’t see it happening in colder parts of the world, like Alaska or Russia. Even so, we say this is definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to ending animal cruelty.
