This Aussie Activewear Brand Turned 94,300 Plastic Bottles Into Clothing This Year

Sustainably stylish.

There’s a few little things each of us can do everyday to reduce our carbon footprint and help the environment. Simple things like making sure you actually use your recycling bin properly, handing your barista a reusable coffee cup for your morning latte, drinking out of BPA-free water bottles and opting for natural cleaning products that don’t contain nasty chemicals.

Research has even shown that being a homebody is better for the environment, even with the energy-consumption that comes with a Netflix subscription, so there’s that too.

Now you’re probably thinking to yourself “honestly, how much difference can little old me really make?” But no matter how much we doubt the impact we personally have in the broader scheme of things (we do live in a big wide world, after all), it’s true when they say, every little bit counts.

Take Nimble Activewear, for example. You may recognise the Bondi Beach-based label for their statement prints and luxe leggings, but what you might not be aware of is their ongoing commitment to sustainability.

And yes, they may be a business which turns over $4 million annually—but they’re also living proof that their eco-freindly actions can go a long way.

Each garment in their core COMPRESSLITE range has been created with fabric using recycled plastic bottles. As a result, the brand has managed to save a total of 94,300 plastic bottles from going into landfill just this year alone.

That’s a lot of plastic bottles. Think; approximately four in each pair of leggings and one in every sports bra.

So, how exactly do these plastic bottles make their way into your gymwear? (You ask yourself as you stare down at your Mount Franklin…)

“The recycled bottles are melted down and turned into chips, then into a yarn,” explains one half of Nimble Activewear, Katia Santilli. “The yarn is then knitted up with spandex to make our core compression fabric. The amazing thing about this process is that it emits over 50% less carbon dioxide than using virgin materials does.”

But their commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop there.

The brand’s unique short supply chain—whereby garments are produced from raw material to finished product within an 80km radius in Taiwan—also contributes to reduced wastage, packaging and transportation.

“Sadly, the global fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world and Nimble Activewear is proud to be taking big steps to change this,” says co-founder, Vera Yan.

An activewear brand that is oh-so stylish and does good by the environment? That’s a yes from us!
