When Romain Gaillard opened the first iteration of The Detox Market on Abbot Kinney in 2010, he had no idea his pop-up shop would grow to be one of LA’s most-loved beauty boutiques.
“It was a little side project—just a two-month pop-up shop—and then we were going to close,” he says as he chuckles. “But people ended up loving it.”
People were so smitten with what The Detox Market had to offer that Gaillard and his co-founder Valerie Grandury ended up opening a permanent location in West Hollywood where consumers could shop all things natural beauty products. Initially, the goal of the pop-up was to introduce customers to a new set of organic beauty brands that they might not previously have had access to.
“A lot of people were looking for hair and skin products, even nail products like polish, that were all-natural or green—but they couldn’t find them,” Gaillard says. And the products that they could find were often in a small skincare section of their local health food store or Whole Foods. Often these early green beauty products just didn’t work as well as their conventional counterparts … or they were packaged in hippy-esque recycled materials. Not exactly chic, and definitely not something a beauty-lover would want to show off on her vanity. Gaillard and Grandury wanted to educate consumers about the brands that actually worked—and where to find them.
The Detox Market has done just that and is proof that organic beauty products have come a long way since 2010. The boutique offers many smaller, lesser known brands that focus on quality ingredients and understand beautiful aesthetics. Walking through the well-stocked aisles is every organic beauty maven’s dream: Popular brands like Tata Harper and RMS Beauty and cult favorites like Odacité grace the shelves.
Gaillard wants to offer guests a “fun experience, and show them that they don’t have to compromise healthy products for beautiful products.”
While we had him, we couldn’t resist picking Gaillard’s brain about the biggest beauty trends for fall (he is, after all, the expert in all brands and products!). “Masks will be huge. There are more formulas coming out, and people are having a lot of fun with that. You can find something for virtually every skin issue.” And in cosmetics, expect “more colors from your favorite brands like Ilia and W3ll People, and more products in general. In the next year, we’ll see the most innovation in organic cosmetics.”
