Hailed for its ability to treat chronic pain, reduce inflammation and ease anxiety, if there are three little letters that are taken the health world by storm at the moment, you better believe them to be CBD.
A chemical compound derived from the cannabis plant, CBD is short for cannabidiol. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the plant, however, unlike marijuana, it doesn’t contain THC, the psychoactive element responsible for getting you high.
As of late, CBD has made its way into ingestible products, skincare and facials thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties—however as Kerrigan Behrens, co-founder of Sagely Naturals shares, there are a few things you need to know when it comes to the do’s and don’ts of CBD to really reap the benefits…

DO…

  • Look at the label

When choosing CBD products, Kerrigan advises finding a product with full spectrum CBD oil. “Full Spectrum CBD Oil has the full cannabinoid profile of the hemp plant, as well as other beneficial compounds that the hemp plant naturally possesses.” Kerrigan goes onto explain that “this includes other cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes and is also referred to as “whole plant extract” or “full-spectrum” CBD. This is a classic case of “the whole is better than the sum of its parts” as CBD works synergistically with the other compounds found in the plant.”

  • Look for products that rely on natural ingredients

“One of the many amazing things about CBD is that it’s 100% plant derived,” shares Kerrigan. “Even when you put products on your skin, you still absorb the ingredients into your bloodstream. That’s why you’ll find that none of our products contain PEGs, parabens, Artificial Fragrances, Ccolors or Dyes, or sulfates. Why ruin such a pure thing with toxic ingredients or fillers?”

  • Ensure your products have been tested

All of our CBD products go through a rigorous triple lab testing process. The reason for this is to ensure that all THC has been removed and that there are no heavy metals, solvents, or other potentially harmful materials in our products. During the triple lab testing process, we test for potency, purity, and pesticides. Any CBD product you use should have the same rigorous testing standards.”

DON’T

  • Don’t expect to get “high”

“While CBD and THC are the most famous of all cannabinoids (aka compounds derived from the cannabis plant), THC is known for its psychoactive effects.”
Kerrigan explains that CBD is unlike its “tipsy cousin” THC and has no psychoactive effects whatsoever.  “The beauty of CBD is that it provides many of the therapeutic benefits associated with cannabis—anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and other wellness benefits—without the associated high.”
“One thing to note: If you want to make 100% sure that you won’t have any high associated with your CBD products, you’ll want to look for products that use THC-free CBD oil, like Sagely Naturals.

  • Don’t confuse hemp seed oil with hemp CBD oil

“While both oils are derived from the hemp plant, hemp seed oil is best known for its moisturizing benefits and high protein profile rather than its therapeutic benefits. Hemp seed oil is popping up in beauty and food products across the country, often with cannabis leaves adorning the packaging so you should look at the ingredient label to ensure that you see the word “cannabinoid-rich” or “CBD-rich” oil to ensure you’re getting the CBD you’re looking for.”

  • Don’t use CBD isolate

Isolated hemp or “isolate” is purified CBD that has been extracted from the plant and processed to remove all of the other cannabinoids, oils, plant material, waxes, chlorophyll, terpenes, and fatty acids,” explains Kerrigan. “This involves cooling the extracted oil until it forms crystals. The crystals are then processed into a powder, and the powder or “isolate” results in a single molecular compound of strictly CBD. As mentioned above, plants like hemp have greater benefits when their constituents work together rather than alone.”
