In case you’ve been living under a rock, 2017 is the year of self-care.
And, we couldn’t be more onboard with the idea. Who doesn’t love the idea of taking a little time out for yourself, after all?
However, we recognise that sometimes the idea of self-care is a little more intimidating than inspirational—if you’ve never thought to give yourself “me time,” where do you even start?
Well, that depends on a few things. Your everyday stress levels, for one. If you have an incredibly demanding job that requires long hours and near-constant access to email, you probably have more stress than most. On the flip-side, you might be able to disconnect from work, but you live in a cramped apartment with three roommates and never get time to yourself—that’s enough to drive anyone a bit bonkers.
Second, take a look at physical health. Someone who eats well and exercises regularly is probably relatively healthy—their body is likely better equipped to adapt to stressful situations, should they arise. But the person who doesn’t get enough sleep, relies on caffeine to stay awake at work, doesn’t eat particularly well, and completes gruelling workouts daily is already putting their body under a lot of stress … They might have a harder time bouncing back from a stressful situation, physical or mental.
Thankfully, you don’t need a tonne of time and boatloads of money to practice self-care. Whether you’ve got 5 minutes or an hour, there’s plenty you quick activities you can do to recharge, rejuvenate, and refocus.
