Pro-surfer Stephanie Gilmore talks food, fitness and fashion

As one of the world’s best known female pro-surfers, Australian Roxy ambassador Stephanie Gilmore quite possibly has the best gig in the world, travelling from one idyllic beach location to the next for her job (or hobby as she calls it!)

As she prepares to hit the water at the 2016 QUIKSILVER and ROXY Pros, which kicks off on March 11th, Amodrn were lucky enough to chat to the six-time world champion (and bona-fide beach babe) about her fitness regime, food philosophy, active wear must-haves and pre-comp rituals.

Meet Stephanie Gilmore

Apart from surfing, what do you do to keep fit?

I normally spend up to two hours in the gym with my trainer. We focus on cross-training, but mix it up with bodyweight exercises, cardio as well as core strength. It just depends on my goals at the time in regards to surfing. Lately, we’ve been doing a lot of hill sprints because surfing requires explosive movements.

How does your training regime differ on-and off-season?

When I’m at home in Australia, I’m pretty disciplined, but when I’m travelling it obviously becomes a lot harder to get to the gym and I don’t have my trainer with me.

Do you have any pre-comp rituals?

I’m not particularly superstitious but my hair tie always has to be in the middle of my hair and I always use the same surf wax during an event.

What are your fave pieces from the Roxy Fitness range?

I love the long sleeve rash vest paired with the matching bottoms. I also think the cropped wetsuit top and matching bottoms are super cute. When I’m surfing I prefer to keep my shoulders covered to protect my skin from the sun, which is why I prefer longer sleeves.

What is your food philosophy?

I’m not too strict with my food. I like to listen to my body and eat fresh, clean food, but don’t stress if I indulge occasionally. My go-to snack is a green smoothie as it fills me up and keeps my metabolism going. I like to add in berries, a super green mix and Sanitarium’s coconut milk.

What are your go-to beauty products?

evo leave in-conditionershade sunscreen and mascara. I also get my eyelashes tinted so I don’t get dreaded panda eyes in the surf!

What do you do for fun in your down time?

Surfing haha! It’s my hobby and work. I also love listening to music, going to Currumbin markets, having dinner parties with friends, reading and playing the guitar – my speciality is blues/jazz.
