Let’s face it: Bad days happen to everyone. Even if your morning is off to a good start, sometimes the world has its own way. And, before you know what’s happened you’re in the worst mood possible.
The good news? There are ways to turn a bad day around. Here are five little tricks that can make you happier right away.
Random act of kindness
According to research conducted by Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Stanford, doing good deeds for others (no matter how big or small) increases our own positive emotions. So, next time you’re feeling down, why not pick up a stranger’s coffee tab if you can afford to do so or donate $5 to a cause you care about?
Get moving
In the wise words of Elle Woods, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” That’s right, recent research has found that exercise doesn’t just help you chill out — working out, specifically running, can actually make you feel happier.
Practice gratitude
Fact: We’ll never be totally rid of stress. But, the key is learning how to effectively deal with it. One way is to practice gratitude. Keep track of things you’re thankful for in a gratitude journal or keep a little note by your computer, so you don’t lose sight of the bigger picture on a bad day.
Listen to a podcast
Terrible day at work? Tune into a podcast for some good vibes. Podcasts are a great form of education and provide endless inspiration, both personally and professionally, along with a lot of laughs and fun along the way. Here are a few of our favourites.
Hug it out
Cuddling doesn’t only feel good — it can actually do good, too. Research suggests the benefits of cuddling may range from relieving stress to increasing libido to improving communication. Just make sure your romantic partner or friend is down for a hug, too.
