Aerobics, retrosweat, perms, scrunchies, walkmans, leg warmers, shoulder pads, The Golden Girls, high-waisted swimwear — this is what truly defined the 80s.
And for those out there who know and love what was a much simpler time in life (Insta-famous, what?), iconic Aussie swimswear label Seafolly is giving a distinct nod to nostalgia as they go back in time, raid their original archives and make all that was cool, cool again.
Flashback — the ultimate collection for lovers of the 80s — is a nine-piece capsule that offers colourful swim designs in vibrant hues of Chilli Red, Envy Green, Blue Ray and Canary Yellow in addition to Sexy Black.
Each colour is complimented by sheeny, silky fabrics and treated with a true 80s update. Think; V hips, tube tops, cheeky cuts and low backs in colourblock styles designed to mix and match.
“The 80’s trend is very feminine and empowering,” says Genelle Walkom, Head Designer and Creative Director of Seafolly. “The view of slipping into a leg-lengthening style is becoming much more alluring for women. It is exciting to see how women of different body shapes are embracing cuts that shaped a generation!”
Walkom has been with the company for 34 years and was the mastermind behind Seafolly’s original 80s designs.
“Back in the 80’s I was influenced by the worldwide fitness craze!,” Walkom tells Amodrn. “Jane Fonda’s workout video with the thigh-grazing leg lines and athletic styling set the tone for swimwear at that time.”
“The styles haven’t evolved too much for Flashback, we’ve updated the fit on some classic favourites and there is actually one piece in the collection where we have replicated the original shape exactly! The fabrications have certainly progressed thanks to today’s technology, the Flashback collection boasts premium quality high-sheen fabrics and on trend shapes in bold primary colours.”
Set on a beachy backdrop, the Flashback campaign stars Aussie models Jayde Heiser and Sarah Shaw looking smoking hot in the flattering designs.
“I believe the reason why the 80s trend is so popular today is largely due to the fact that women of the 1980’s were active, strong and felt empowered. Women of today are looking for the same thing and 80s swimwear is unapologetically powerful.” – Genelle Walkom, Head Designer and Creative Director of Seafolly
Hero pieces in the collection include the Stella One Shoulder teamed with the Le Bon Rio and the cut-out Monroe one-piece.
Prices start at $49.95 for separates and $99.95 for a one piece maillot.
Flashback is available to shop in all Seafolly stores, The Iconic, select international stores and on www.seafolly.com.au.
