5 Brain Health Habits To Help With Memory and Brain Function

  • Sleep: You should aim to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep a day to help with memory retention. This will help you decrease stress, help you function properly, and make sure that you stay super healthy.
  • Nutrition: You should try to incorporate some of the following ten brain-healthy foods into your diet to protect brain function and help with memory: berries, olive oil, leafy greens, nuts, beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, and dark cocoa powder.
  • Emotional Well-Being: There has been some recent research that has found that short daily practice of mind-body therapy can help alleviate some of the signs and symptoms that often precede dementia. If meditation isn’t for you – practice some version of self-care, whether that be getting better sleep, taking a bath, or just de-compressing at the end of the day with a glass of wine.
  • Physical Exercise: There has been recent research shows that physical exercise is one of the very best things you can do for your brain. The key is creating and sticking to an exercise plan that moves your body and safely raises your heart rate. Exercise is singlehandedly the best thing you can do for not only your brain health, but your overall health.
  • Cognitive Fitness: Speaking of working out, mental fitness is one of the best ways to exercise your brain. You should be teaching it new things! Try learning a new musical instrument or language or pick up that new hobby you’ve been wanting to try!
