You’ve heard it a million times before — ‘the ketogenic diet burns fat insanely quickly! All you need to do is not eat carbs EVER! It’s so simple!’
But is keto (eating a low-carb, high-fat diet to shift your body into the fat-burning state known as ketosis) really the magical weight loss elixir it’s made out to be? How much more fat does it really burn than other diets?
Well, according to new research, a staggering 10% more! In the study published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews, scientists took 30 adults who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, a collection of health conditions that increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Participants were then randomly split into three groups. One group followed a keto diet but didn’t exercise, another ate a standard American diet and didn’t exercise, and the third ate a standard American diet and exercised for 30 minutes a day for up to five days a week.

In the 10 weeks, the participants who were on the ketogenic diet had ‘significant’ changes in their weight, body fat percentage, BMI, hemoglobin A1c (a test that measures a person’s blood sugar), and ketones (the byproduct of your body burning fat for energy). Most impressively, their metabolic rate (the rate at which you burn calories when you’re at rest) was on average 10% higher than those who followed a standard diet. “All variables for the ketogenic group out-performed those of the exercise and non-exercise groups,” the researchers wrote in the study.
While it’s important to keep in mind that the study had a small sample size, it’s interesting to note that the keto diet improved their participants overall health as well as their body fat. Definitely positive news for keto followers!
