Can CBD Help With the Quality of Your Sleep?

Sooner or later, we all need to improve this aspect of our health.

Sooner or later, sleep can become something that we all need to improve upon. So what is it about the quality of our rest that can either help or ruin our day—and what products and practices can help our sleep become the greatest it can be. There are melatonin, magnesium, and CBD suggested supplementation strategies that we can use to journey into a good night’s sleep to wake up refreshed. So what is it about CBD that can assist us? We interviewed the experts at Highline Wellness, who offer unique CBD products, for a Q&A regarding sleep and your CBD intake. From the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep, here are a few FAQs that you may want to learn more about from Dr. Olivia Audrey, Highline’s Resident Sleep Doctor and a Doctor of Natural Medicine. Can CBD Help With the Quality of Your Sleep?

What benefits does CBD bring to your PM routine?

CBD is one of the most beneficial things you can introduce into your nighttime and daily wellness routine. Our bodies have inherent Cannabinoid receptors, meaning that we are biologically hard-wired to require a certain amount of CBD compounds. These receptors affect multiple systems on a psychological, physical, and immune level. When the required amount isn’t met, we can experience agitation, insomnia, anxiety, and heightened pain sensation. CBD helps quiet those receptors and encourages your body to decompress and relax naturally.

What are the best ways to wind down before bed?

I always encourage my clients to develop a ritual or routine for their morning and nighttime habits. Activities include timing your evening meals 3-4 hours before bed for proper digestion, limiting blue light exposure past 8 pm, and creating a “sleep window.” This means cell phones are silenced, and tv is off, where you use calming techniques such as sleep meditations and stress reduction techniques.

How do you find good-quality sleep that’s best for you?

Everybody and every BODY has different sleep needs, so while some people require 8-10 hours to feel refreshed, others might only need six solid hours of REM sleep. After you have eliminated or cut down on external stimulants, i.e., energy drinks, blue light exposure past 8 pm, etc., the best way to determine this is to experiment with getting a few more or fewer hours of sleep to see how you feel. Ideally, getting a good night’s sleep should feel the same as eating a delicious, wholesome meal just to the point of satiety. When finding your sleep window, make sure to only move the needle by an hour in any direction at one time. If you are wondering if you need more sleep, try going to bed at 8 pm instead of 9 and so on.

What habits can someone make to help them sleep throughout the night more?

First, always have a conversation with your doctor or healthcare provider to eliminate any underlying health causes that could contribute to sleep disturbance. For most people, the most common complaints are:

  • Anxiety
  • Pain
  • Insomnia

These can be a side effect of overstimulation during the day and the inability to shut your mind and body into a sleep state at night. My top tips for creating a better sleep environment are: •Get external sunlight exposure in the morning hours (outside, away from screens). This helps regulate our circadian rhythms, allowing our body to normalize sleep/wake cycles.

  • Eliminate blue light exposure from cell phones, computers, and TVs past 8 pm
  • Begin the process of winding down for sleep approximately 2 hours before actually crawling into bed
  • Taking supplements and limiting caffeine and food intake within this window allows our bodies to begin the transition into sleep mode.

How often should you incorporate CBD into your daily routine?

I include CBD in my daily regimen, night and morning! Daily CBD supplementation has been shown to encourage natural Phyto and endocannabinoid production in our body, meaning we get the most benefit over time.

Does it matter what time of day you take CBD?

Especially when beginning CBD usage, taking it at nighttime is always recommended. It can cause drowsiness and relaxation, which isn’t helpful during the day when it’s necessary to be awake and alert. Discuss the benefits and if CBD is right for you with your healthcare provider. Let us know if it improves your sleep.
