Barbie are now promoting a positive body image

Barbie, the stereotypical blue-eyed blonde bombshell, has been given a makeover. Mattel’s iconic dolls will now come in petite, curvy, and tall shapes and also have a whole range of new skin tones and hair styles. As advocates of body diversity, we (and so many others) are applauding Mattel for this long overdue step in the right direction for positive body image, which will most likely be very meaningful to young girls.

“For 57 years, Barbie has been a reflection of the times, which is why she has remained the number one fashion doll and global icon she is today,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, Senior Vice President and Global General Manager Barbie. “We are excited to offer these new dolls. The variety in body type, skin tone and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them.”

The new dolls join Barbie’s Fashionista line, which will now feature four body-types, seven skin tones, 22 eye colours and 24 hairstyles — an acknowledgement, belated for some, that women come in many sizes and shapes.

“We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty,” added Mazzocco.

The range of new dolls can be viewed on www.barbie.com and the collection is available at leading Australian toy retailers from early March.
