We’ve all been there. You have one of those days where nothing seems to go right. Your bus is late, you spill coffee down the front of your shirt and for some reason, all of your work projects seem to be due at once. All you want to do when you get home is relax on the lounge and watch some trashy TV. But when you open the door, you’re reminded of the fact that your apartment looks like it’s been hit by a bomb. “That’s right, I haven’t cleaned in two weeks!” you groan. Suddenly, you’re feeling even more panicked.
Your home should be a relaxing haven where you can unwind, not another source of stress in your already chaotic life. But when you’ve got a million things on your plate, it can be hard to find the time to go all Marie Kondo on your home. Luckily, there are a few simple hacks to take your home from chaotic to calm.

Get your Feng Shui on

The ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui is based around the idea that your living space reflects your life. So, if your home is stress-inducing, you’re inevitably going to be stressed. It’s believed that all objects contain an energy called chi and that you need to organise your home in a way that allows it to flow freely. Whether or not you believe that, introducing some of the basic principles of Feng Shui can go a long way in de-stressing your place. Try reducing clutter as much as possible (that means getting rid of it, not shoving it in a cupboard!), using mirrors to boost the energy and adding water features like a tabletop fountain.

Go green

Don’t underestimate the power of greenery in creating a calm atmosphere in your home. Indoor plants have been scientifically proven to reduce stress, not to mention, they make you more focused and productive. You can check out some of our favourite relaxation-inducing plants here. Fresh flowers are another great way to brighten up your home and make it feel more like a calm sanctuary.

Find your calm space

Whether it’s a spot by the windowsill, your balcony or a nook in your bedroom, it’s a good idea to have one spot in your home that’s just for relaxing. That means you can’t do anything work-related when you’re hanging out there! Decorate it with comfy pillows, a nice throw rug, inspiring art—anything that helps you feel calm and relaxed.

Collect some candles

No zen haven would be complete without a calming scented candle (or ten!). However, you’re going to want to choose your aroma wisely, as anything too heavy can give you a headache. Jasmine is always a good choice, as German researchers have found that it can be just as calming as valium! Vanilla has also been scientifically proven to be naturally uplifting and relaxing. We love this one from Natio, because it has both!

Let the light in

Unless you happen to be a vampire, hanging out in a dark dungeon isn’t particularly relaxing. Getting as much natural light into your home as possible will help maximise the good vibes. Not only will it help you soak up more mood-boosting vitamin D, natural sunlight instantly brings a sense of calm to any space. Ditch your old, dreary curtains and go for light, white gauzy ones instead. Himalayan Salt Lamps are also a great way to brighten up your space while improving the air quality (and they look pretty, too!)
