When it comes to applying makeup, most things are pretty easy to do. It might take a couple of goes to nail the perfect high pony or the right amount of mascara, but it’s usually pretty quick and easy. Then, there’s winged eyeliner. Sure, the average person can slick a bit of liner onto their upper lashes without looking like they just lost a fight with Ronda Rousey. But as for getting a flawless, perfectly even line without being late to work? Even with years of practice, that’s generally not within the realm of us mere mortals! But there’s special breed of humans who can effortlessly swipe on Audrey Hepburn-worthy liner in a matter of seconds. They’re called beauty vloggers! Luckily, we managed to convince one of our favourites to give us the inside scoop. If anyone’s an expert when it comes to winged eyeliner, it’s the gorgeous Rachael Brook. The Aussie beauty guru has more than 23,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel, thanks to her easy-to-follow makeup tutorials. Here are Rachael’s top tips for achieving that perfect, sharp line, no matter how unsteady your hands are!

Do your liner first
If you have unsteady hands, try doing your winged liner before applying any other makeup. This makes it easy to clean up the shape of your liner without ruining the makeup you may have already applied.
Keep concealer handy
Keep a clean angled brush with a touch of concealer on it handy when applying your winged liner. Using the brush on its angle, and neatly running it along the edge of your winged liner will make your edges sharp!
Use the right tool
Use a tool that works easily for you. I personally love to use a thin felt tip liner when doing my own winged liner. But when I do someone else’s, I prefer using a small angled brush and a gel eyeliner.
Avoid liquid
Don’t feel like you have to use a liquid eyeliner to achieve the winged liner look . In fact, unless you’re a pro at it, I would say to avoid using liquids because they can be very runny and messy. Try using a felt tip liner pen for more control, or a gel which isn’t so runny. This will give you more time to perfect your look.
Get sticky
Using sticky tape as a guide is a great way to make sure your winged liner is even on both sides. Just make sure you don’t use a tape that’s TOO sticky, as peeling it off won’t be so enjoyable!
