Paris, France is one of the most traveled-to European cities. And there’s no surprise there! There are incredible sites to see, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and The Louvre to name a few. It is also home to some of the best fashion, art, and cafes in the world. But as much as people travel to this vibrant city to see these famous landmarks, we are lucky enough to live in a time where we can share with each other the less-known gems of the city that are equally as important to see to get the full Parisian experience.
1. Au Vieux Paris d’Arcole
📍Central Paris
Located in the heart of Paris, this hole-in-the-wall restaurant is picturesque. Known for its blooming exterior that is wrapped in wisteria vines and vegetation. Step inside for a blast from the past with stone-lined walls, antique furniture, and Renaissance-looking decor. Besides the aesthetically pleasing exterior–this family owned and operated restaurant is a go-to place for a home cooked French meal. Rable de Lapin a l’ancienne anyone? (Yep, that means rabbit. I think I’ll stick with a coffee, personally.)
2. Musée des Egouts
📍Central Paris
While it might seem odd to visit a country and go tour their sewage system, (hey, it doesn’t smell as bad as you’d think!) Parisians take great pride in the beauty that they have created under the city. At the Musée des Egouts, you can explore the history and engineering of these dark, damp tunnels. This system dates back to the 14th century and expands over 1,300 miles. Keep your cute shoes at home for this one, ladies, as the tunnels are moist and muddy in some spots.
3. Beehives at Jardin du Luxembourg
📍Central Paris
Of course, the Jardin du Luxembourg should be on the top of your must-see places list while you’re in Paris, but lesser known is the beehive sanctuary at the gardens. Nestled next to the orchard, you’ll find a collection of antique structures that house a hefty population of bees. For all you bee enthusiasts out there–Paris is a pesticide-free zone so the bees at the gardens are thriving! (Unlike the rest of the world’s bees ATM.) This functioning apiary produces its own honey and offers classes in modern beekeeping techniques.
4. The Montmartre Vineyards
📍North Paris
Hidden amongst the hilltop city of Montmartre, you can find the only winery left in the city of Paris. Make sure to pick up a bottle of wine while you’re there because they only produce about 1,500 bottles of wine per year. Even though it’ll probably taste similar to that $5 bottle that you get back at home (Que flashback to wine Wednesdays in college), it will be a collector’s item that most people can’t say that they have!
5. Rue Cremieux Bastille
📍Southeastern Paris
You can find this hidden gem tucked away from the bustle of the city. Each home on this cobblestone street boasts a vibrant color and flower adorned windowsills. Some people say it’s not worth a separate trip, but if you’re in the area its a must-see. And don’t act like you haven’t gone to greater lengths to get a cool pic for Instagram.
6. Parc Des Buttes Chaumont
📍Northeastern Paris
While most of the famous Paris attractions are in the midst of the city, the Parc Des Buttes Chaumont is located in the northeastern part of Paris and it is worth the trip. This beautiful park has rolling hills of greenery, a lake, and a waterfall. The perfect place for a picnic with all of the best cheese and wine that France has to offer.
