Decorating your home can feel like a never-ending project. Once you start, it doesn’t take long for it to become obsessive and before you know it, you’re lost in a Pinterest vortex, having sleepless nights over ottomans.

Do you go Nordic, rustic or beachy? Do you want it clean and simple or filled with antiques? There are so many beautiful styles and inspiring designers but they all seem to agree on one thing: a room isn’t complete without a little greenery.  It’s an old trick used by the decor-obsessed, and with the resurgence of the earthy-minimalist design style that’s all over Instagram lately, it seems like everyone’s catching on.

But if you have a black thumb, bringing plant life into your home can be intimidating—after all, you don’t want to be a botanical murderer! For the person who can barely keep a succulent alive, here are the easiest plants to take care of.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

If all the indoor plants had to vote on yearbook accolades, the Fiddle Leaf Fig would win “Most Popular.” Beloved by interior designers, fiddle leaf figs are pretty easy to take care of and can end up growing six feet tall. They prefer indirect light (perfect for apartment living) and need to be watered just twice a week. One thing to note—fiddle leaf figs get anxious when you relocate them too often and will retaliate by dropping their leaves, so try to keep your plant anchored in one spot.

Fern

Fluffy and flowy, the Fern does well in low-light environments that mimic the forest floor. Low-growing plants like ferns are excellent indoor plants, as long as you water them regularly.

Aloe Vera

Basically impossible to kill, the aloe vera plant is also incredibly beneficial to keep in your bedroom. Aloe vera plants filter the air, and they work best at night.

Jade Plant

Because they’re tough little succulents, jade plants can last a long time without water. Make sure they’re in the sun for at least four hours a day.

Oxalis Triangularis

Also known as the “love plant,” the purple heart-shaped leaves on this houseplant make for a nice change of pace compared to your all-green shrubbery. Make sure you put it in a super sunny spot and keep them well-hydrated—oxalis hates to have dry roots.

Sansevieria

Often called the Snake Plant or Mother-In-Law’s tongue (we’ll let you put two and two together), Sansevieria is an architectural plant that works well in minimalist homes.

Orchids

They’re beautiful, love low light, and are so easy to take care of. Seriously, all you need to do is drop an ice cube in their soil once a week (SO easy!)

ZZ Plant

With their waxy texture and perfectly green stalks and leaves, ZZ plants are often mistaken for plastic fakes! That being said, they’re really pretty, and even grow well in fluorescent light—so grab one for your home and one for your office, while you’re at it!

Pothos

Pothos plants might be the MVPs of the houseplant world. With their sprawling vines and palm-sized green leaves, pothos add tons of greenery to your home with minimal effort.

Have a small space? Peperomia, or the radiator plant, is compact and perfect for tight corners. All it needs is low to medium light, or fluorescent lighting, to flourish.
